Debate Stand FAQs

What is a Debate Podium Called?

Debate podiums have lots of different names, with lots of the terms being used interchangeably. We prefer to say ‘debate podium’ when referring to a stand used to present a debate argument, but you could also say:

  • Lectern

  • Debate stand

  • Podium

  • Lecture stand

Is a Podium Essential When Debating?

Absolutely. Some people choose to sit, or even to stand on an empty stage whilst debating. Whilst this is fine to do, it doesn’t maximise the impact of your argument. Firstly, by standing, you’re giving your body as much room as possible to allow your lungs to inflate, helping you project your voice to the audience. Plus, you’re more likely to be seen by everyone in the room.

However, some people feel awkward just standing on an empty stage. This is where a debate stand comes into play. By using a debate stand, you have somewhere to pop your notes, without having to look down to read them. Plus, if you feel nervous, or have shaky hands, you can firmly grip the lectern to maintain a stable posture.

How Should You Stand at a Debate Stand?

Good posture is crucial for delivering a persuasive argument. Most importantly, stand upright. Leaning can appear too casual and may weaken your credibility with the audience. Although standing for long periods can be challenging, find a stance that feels natural and allows you to speak with confidence.

Whilst we recommend keeping your hands on the lectern if you’re feeling a little nervous, avoid gripping it too tightly, as this looks unnatural. If you feel confident enough to do so, walk around the stage and lectern a little, whilst still maintaining eye contact with the audience. This helps you appear more confident - an essential part of an engaging debate!
